Get access to six simple things you can do in 15-minutes or less to improve your SEO and get your website (and content) to show up in search.

I think it’s only fair that I’m writing this blog post on a day where I didn’t have anything to post. And I mean that–I didn’t have a single thing on my brain to write today, even though I fully acknowledge this year’s goal was to get consistent on my own blog for the first time in years.

But, in all fairness, this is what makes this post even better–and maybe give you a little reminder that you’re not the only one in the world to struggle to come up with topics to blog about (because, samesies).

And while I can’t give you a list of what to post and when to post it (we’d have to get to know each other first), I can, however share some of the most common topics you can blog about when you have nothing to post:

Blog Post Topics for When You Have Nothing to Post (That Are Also Good for SEO)

These are not copy/paste ideas for bloggers and this isn’t a list that’ll just tell you to come up with more lists…but this is a collection of blog topics you can adapt to your own business or brand.

How are these blog topics good for SEO? While the actual ranking of your post will depend on the keyword opportunity, your overall strategy, and your SEO blogging skills–we’re always writing with SEO in mind (which hey hi hello if we haven’t met, I’m Mckayla, your organic SEO consultant and strategist).

As always, take what you need and leave what you don’t! Here are the blog topics I like to use when I don’t know what to post:

#1. A Tell-All of Your Services (or Products)

I love a good tell-all when it comes to your services (or offers, or products). Think of this as both a backstory (the why) and the actual implementation or workflow.

For a copywriter, this could look like sharing your onboarding process–and dropping little gems about how great you are at nailing your client’s voice, or how your copywriting is layered in sales psych for higher conversion or SEO for better visibility.

Or, let’s pretend you’re an e-commerce shop that sells hair extensions and your values are rooted in providing diverse extension options like curls and coils. Write a tell-all on how you’ve included this in your shop and products, the ethical sourcing your hair, and the texture-match guarantee you offer shoppers.

This post works well to create a backlink-able post. As in, it’s an easy link-to when you’re writing other posts around your offers (and internal links are amazing for SEO).

#2. Piece of Industry News or Updates

Part of blogging isn’t just conversions (although that’s really cool and needed too), but it’s also establishing YOU as the go-to. As the know-it-all in the best way, of course.

One of the best ways to do that? Share your take, a break-down, or simply share an update covering a piece of industry news or platform updates.

A social media manager could share their thoughts on a new planning app–or latest TikTok update. It could also be industry-adjacent–whatever YOUR audience wants to hear about that would build trust with YOU, too.

This actually has huge opportunity for SEO, too. Think back to all the HoneyBook updates (a business CRM) in the last year–all new opportunities to rank…that opportunity exists in your industry, too.

#3. Review Your Favorite Tool, Course, Program, or Product

A review blog post is one of the easiest to create, rank, and make money from—and the closest you’ll get making truly passive income (if you do it right). Think back to your go-to tools, what’s something you use daily to get stuff done for yourself or your clients?

Maybe it’s not a tool, but a product. What’s something you recommend to clients all the time? Something that compliments your services? Or a program you took this last year that you can’t help but recommend.

Take the thing you’re thinking of and write a review! Also, this isn’t just “earn affiliate income” it’s also building trust with your audience by providing insight into what happens behind the scenes in your business and your actual experience with things you recommend (and the why).

Plus, when a client or someone in your audience has a good experience with something (or someone) you recommend, they trust you more—meaning they’ll be more inclined to come back to YOU when they’re ready to invest.

*you can write a review blog post in 30 minutes or less using the review blog post kit that gives you keyword templates, what to include in your post, and a full breakdown of what goes where, when, and why!! Grab yours here.

#4. A Listicle!!

This is literally just a list of things that serve a purpose. This is an old-school blogger blog post idea—but it definitely works well!

You don’t need to list 99 things (and please don’t list 99+, that’s just TOO much for your audience to actually consume). But you can absolutely share your favorite eczema-healing body butters or a list of the on-boarding questions that give you the most information for your work.

It could also be something like this post, a list of ideas that are actionable for your audience. Or something more educational or informational. Whatever you choose though, a listicle can be as simple and straightforward or as chunky as you want it!

#5. The Resource You’re Always Wishing You Had

This one can be a little more time-consuming, but think of the moments when you’re on Threads or in a Facebook group and you’re seeing the same question asked over and over again. Essentially, you’re writing the blog post you keep reaching for (or wish you had) to link drop.

Maybe you’re a bookkeeper during January and you’re seeing constant questions around who needs a 1099–or they’re looking for budgeting tips for their new year. Or maybe you’re an OBM and constantly seeing Threads asking if they “need an OBM or a VA” or rather, what’s the difference.

Maybe you’re a sleep consultant and you’re always fending off the same nap-time question. That’s the resource to write today!

Yes, you should research your keywords to make sure you’re phrasing it in the way your audience is searching it (using their words–not necessarily the professionals). BUT, these posts have a little bit of leeway since you’ll get referral traffic (and referral traffic helps improve your SEO!!).

#6. A “Complete” Guide to Something

This is one of my least favorites to write–but it’s also one of the absolute bests for getting me out of a “what should I blog about” slump. A complete guide is a blog post that explores multiple aspects of a topic, thing, or concept, usually providing the when, why, and how (or a handful of tips) around key elements.

This post I published about SEO for midwives or this one about SEO for HSP entrepreneurs are great examples of complete guide blog posts.

The reason they’re so good for blogging slumps or coming up with more blog post topics is because:

  • Almost each section can branch off and become it’s own blog post further explaining the steps, tips, or ideas
  • They’re heavy on backlinking to other posts you have and showing you where you’re missing a resource you wish had to backlink (and now it’s a post you can put on your to-do list
  • It gives Google a chance to start ranking your post for variations of keywords (not just your main blog post keyword) which can give you an idea of what your audience is searching for, inspiring your next top-ranking post 😉

P.S. “complete guides” are traditionally known for being lengthy, coming with a heavy word count (think 3,000+ words) but that’s not quite the requirement anymore. These posts often end up longer than others, but can also be around 750+ words, it depends mostly on your audience, the reader, and what they need to know.

Still Don’t Know What to Post on Your Blog Next? Here’s What to Do

Take a break.

You heard me. Sometimes you just need to take a break. Some seasons just aren’t meant for blogging—or sometimes you just need a different approach to get the results you’re looking for (like the oh-so-good benefits of SEO!!).

Step back, try something else to improve your SEO like guest blogging or podcasting, working on improving your website’s SEO to help the posts you already have rank higher (the SEO Mini Audit + Optimization is perfect for it), or get support with your blog posts themselves.

You have options!! And while the options depend on where you’re at in your business, you rarely have to do it alone (and sometimes all you need is a little nudge in the right direction).
