Whether your show is two months or two years old, there’s something unavoidable: building a stash of old podcast episodes.
The benefit of podcasting is that your episodes provide value—they leave an impact, and thanks to this, you have subscribers (or followers) who are waiting and ready to listen to your show same time same day next week.
But, what happens to your old episodes? You spend hours planning, recording, editing, and publishing your episode—but, where does it go after its few days of fame? Sure, you can come back and share the link on a low-energy day, but it’s not gonna get the same “oomph” it originally did.
Instead of leavin’ you hanging and guessing about how to get a little bit more out of the oh-so-good podcast content you already have, I’m tellin’ you exactly what you can do:
I think this is what most podcasters imagine when they think about repurposing their old podcast episodes—trimming them down into clips or segments and publishing them as a standalone reel, YouTube short, or TikTok.
And you don’t have to have a video version of your podcast to clip, you can trim your audio and pair it with a b-roll, too.
The downside: it’s time-consuming. You have to search for the clips that are going to snag listeners’ attention in just a few seconds—they’re not committed to listening to your entire show (at least, not yet).
This is probably the least time-consuming, but you’ll need to promote the lists to get more listeners. Take a few minutes to compile playlists of your old episodes that center around a specific issue or audience niche.
If you love to record episodes as a series, create a playlist for each! This allows you to easily share a resource with someone on another channel or platform that connects and helps address their current issue (which still presents YOU as the expert).
I like to sum it up as “social media content,” but the way you’ll repurpose your podcast episode can vary depending on the platforms you post on. For example, the way you format an Instagram carousel is gonna be different than how you repurpose it for your IG stories.
But there’s soooo much potential to repurpose your podcast for socials. Every episode can turn into an insane amount of content (which is one of the reasons why I love it so much), you just need to know how to leverage it!
While this is infinitely easier when you have a video podcast (because of the video already being on hand), podcasts are more than welcome to publish their audio-only show on the platform.
YouTube is a unique podcasting platform as it has a greater chance of being discovered via SEO (both on Google, other search engines, and the YouTube platform). Essentially, your show has a chance of naturally appearing in YouTube search—in front of its 122 million daily users—and you’re gaining a new listener.
Specifically, an SEO-optimized blog post. Did you know that the audio of your podcast isn’t indexed by Google? AKA Google is completely unaware of all the goodness you’re sharing and how much it would benefit their users (the ones who are actively searching for the content you’re creating).
Turning your episodes into SEO blog posts allows you to show up in search results and cater to an entirely new audience—you’re doubling your content and visibility, but you’re not doubling your workload (thank-you repurposing).
Don’t use this as an excuse to copy/paste your transcript. It WILL bite you in the metaphorical butt and even hurt your SEO.
And, fun fact, repurposing your episode into a blog post makes all the other repurposing easier! It takes the content from something amazing to listen to to something amazing to read!
