Earning passive income as a blogger is the dream – you sit back and relax while money starts pouring in. Or at least, that’s the goal.
Truth is, reality is a little different. Most passive income sources require traffic and that’s something not all bloggers have. You may never have ‘enough’ traffic to create a steady income from JUST passive income. But, you can at least try.
Passive income is income that requires little to no effort to earn and maintain. It’s all about putting in the work upfront, but then leaving it on it’s own to make money without you having to put in constant effort.
Passive income is the type of income most bloggers strive to earn and is what keeps paying for years to come – if done correctly.
There are hundreds of ways to earn passive income. You can market, monetize, promote, and spin your monetization methods however often or however you need.
If you’ve already managed to get a few good sales under your belt, congrats. If not, here’s a few ways to start generating passive income:
Unlike most blogger gurus – I’m going to suggest that you avoid placing ads on your site unless you have at least 25,000 monthly sessions. This is when you can get into a good program that pays decently and have the traffic to support it.
Think about it, getting paid pennies doesn’t make up for slow site speeds and sometimes spammy ad placement. Still, it’s a personal decision. With the right traffic, ads are a great way to earn passive income.
Affiliate marketing is the bread and butter of passive income and actually the entire income of most bloggers that don’t offer services. Affiliate marketing is marketing a product or service for another person or company in an exchange for a percentage of sales made due to their post or link.
Affiliate marketing is one of the most versatile ways to earn passive income. You can land recurring sales (you get paid as long as the buyer is shopping/subscribed), pay per lead (when they sign up for a free product), and straight up sales – some even offering as high as 40% of the sale!
The best part is that you can start right away, without any traffic. I recommend you do too! Having affiliate links already on your posts ensures that your older posts are monetized too and not just your most recent.
Quick tip: Don’t market products you know nothing about. You’ll ruin the integrity of your brand and lose followers + readers. If your viewers don’t trust you, they won’t shop through you. If you need more help with Affiliate marketing, checkout my how-to guide for beginners.
Digital products are my top pick when it comes to developing a way to earn passive income. A digital product allows you to earn a higher percentage of sales forever, increasing your overall income.
Creating a digital product doesn’t have to be hard, you can create something as simple as a weekly planner, Lightroom preset, or instagram highlight covers. The goal is to not overthink it and create a product that will be well received by your audience.
Passive income is the goal to aim for as a blogger, especially as a blogger who may be searching to supplement their typical pay. It’s a great way to save money, time, and effort with a large reward.
The best way to earn passive income will depend on you and your audience. Are you able to create something to sell? Do you have the ability to write in an ad? Can you deal with a slowed site?
You’re not limited to only one option, the best bloggers have multiple streams of income – and so should you!
