So, you wanna start a blog, but you’re not sure what you wanna blog about. Been there, done that – no shame here. I started blogging to make money and supplement my income as a stay at home mom (babysitting is EXPENSIVE), but not every niche is ‘profitable.’
If you’re in this to make money, choosing a niche isn’t as simple as picking something you’re good at – although that’s a bonus. It’s more about choosing a niche that is popular, has an invested audience, and is easy to break into.
While some niches are extremely competitive, it’s still possible to create a profitable blog and earn your desired income with them. Others are simply so niched that you’ll have a strong supporting audience that can help monetize your posts quickly!
Here are some of my favorite (and the most profitable) blog ideas to make money in 2020:
It’s not surprising that parenting blogs rank #1 on my list! Even with their super competitive niche, parenting blogs remain popular because, well, there are just so many parents!
Every parent is looking for advice, tips, and just general information about raising their children, myself included!
Parenting blogs are also extremely easy to monetize; you can use:
There are nearly unlimited opportunities and tactics that you can use on your website, in your blog posts, and on your social media.
This one might not be super obvious, but how many times have you researched how to save money, how to do your own taxes, or just how to budget? I even have an entire app on my phone dedicated to it.
Finance blogs are a smaller niche to get into, but they have sooo much potential and will continue to have potential as more online programs offer referral benefits and affiliate opportunities.
If you get started now, it will be easy to monetize once you have a strong following.
Finance blogs are also a great way to introduce and advertise related services! You can offer budget coaching calls, accounting services, tax filing, etc.
There are hundreds of thousands of lifestyle blogs currently online, and there are more popping up every day. Wanna know why?
Lifestyle bloggers have a leg-up in the affiliate marketing race. With the potential to earn income from clothing vendors, travel vendors, makeup vendors, and more, these bloggers have the opportunity to write whatever they want and earn from wherever they want.
The downside is that to truly be successful in this niche, you’ll need to create a trusting relationship with your audience. They need to trust your reviews and suggestions, which only comes from creating consistent content over time.
A personal favorite of mine, DIY Blogs are a hotspot for traffic. You can niche down within the blogging community and find an audience that consistently brings traffic to your site, making it a gold mine for ad revenue.
DIY blogs bring value in a different way than more traditional style blog posts. They don’t need to sell within their posts; DIY blogs can thrive based on ads alone. Of course, sponsorships and affiliate marketing are a plus!
Be careful when starting a health and wellness blog. Although they are great to promote referrals and sponsorships, you have to cater to the trends.
You can’t make a keto blog and expect it to survive forever, just like you can’t make an intuitive eating blog. With health and wellness blogs, you have to make sure you’re diverse enough to face changing health trends but niched enough to have a targeted audience.
Luckily, health and wellness blogs are amazing for coaches and trainers. They create a platform for you to find your dream client, even if you’re super niched.
There are two main types of food blogs: recipe blogs and general food envy blogs. One focuses on making the food, and the other is all about reviewing the food. Both can generate a strong passive income but in different ways.
Recipe blogs are another blog type that can thrive on ads. Recipes are popular around the world and will keep viewers on your page as they try to recreate your recipe, increasing your ad revenue.
Food review blogs thrive with sponsorships; once you’ve become established, you can reach out to restaurants and offer to give honest reviews of their food in exchange for money or free food. Restaurants may also start reaching out to you if they realize you’re in their area.
While they are not my favorite and not the quickest way to monetize, self-improvement blogs CAN bring in a consistent income. Self-improvement blogs allow bloggers to partner with online businesses.
You can pair with a wellness or mindset coach, websites like BetterHelp, and other similarly niched partners.
Thanks to COVID-19, this type of blog has a huge opportunity to bloom within a short time-frame with the right marketing and keywords.
Relationship blogs are not super popular due to the creativity it requires to continue producing relevant content. However, if you have the knack for it and the knowledge to back it up, you can become quite successful.
While I know you can create a six-figure blog based on relationship advice, the way to monetize depends on your style of writing and personal preferences.
You won’t typically see me on a fashion blog unless it’s for research purposes, but even I can admit to their ever-growing popularity.
Fashion blogs are an influencer’s best friend and are typically created to add another source of revenue alongside their Instagram or social media. These blogs can go VIRAL on Pinterest with the right look.
These blogs are similar to lifestyle blogs, and you can monetize them in almost every way!
Okay, so I always call my blog a ‘blog blog’ since I never know how to label it, but, technically, it could be considered a business and marketing blog.
Lemme tell you, it’s a hard niche to break into. My traffic was at a stalemate after three months and starting booming nearly a year later, but with traffic comes income, so I’m not complaining!
The upside is that you have a greater potential to earn recurring revenue as most products you promote offer recurring affiliate payouts. The downside is that you don’t have as many affiliate opportunities.
I WOULD HAVE A GAMING BLOG IF I HAD ENOUGH INTERNET! I love gaming blogs and you have so many opportunities for sponsorships and affiliate sales.
While it is a niche audience, it’s an audience that is well aware of the cost of gaming, which makes them more open to higher-priced sales and offers. You also have the opportunity to collaborate with large brands that bring along an even bigger audience!
Travel blogs are so much fun and create a sense of adventure that many search for, making it easy to grow an audience with the right writing style. Starting a travel blog (assuming you’re an avid traveler) is a surefire way to gain an audience.
With travel blogs, I recommend ads and a digital product such as a travel guide or stock photos of the locations you travel to. The only problem with these blogs is that you have an audience, but how many of them are actually going to visit the locations you do?
Discovering new home and interior design blogs make my brain happy – it’s the inspo I need for my own fixer-upper. That’s what it comes down to; how many people have a home?
That’s your potential audience.
On top of that, you can use affiliate marketing to make high-ticket sales on large items such as beds, specialty furniture, and appliances.
It seems kind of odd to add this one in because I’m talking about ‘how to pick a profitable blog,’ which is a ‘how to make money blog’ – but I couldn’t leave it off the list for that reason!
Making money is a way of the world, you have to have an income of some sort to sustain yourself through groceries, housing, utilities, and just fun! That’s why it’s not-so-surprising that a ‘how to make money’ blog would thrive!
A great way to monetize these blogs is by offering opportunities through referrals – ones that pay you when they sign up or get the job. Another is by implementing ads on your website, especially if you’re an advice-giver rather than an action-taker.
Starting a blog the right way is harder than it sounds and takes time and money. And if your goal is to monetize right away or replace your income through blog revenue, choosing a niche or topic can be crucial.
